TODAY’S GOSPEL
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!” ’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.” Luke 12:13–21
“INTENTIONAL GENEROSITY”
“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” –Jesus, Luke 12:13
“Take care to guard against all greed, for life does not consist of possessions.” –Jesus, Luke 12:14–15
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” Ecclesiastes 1:2, NIV
“Here is one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and that one’s legacy must be left to another who has not toiled for it. This also is meaningless (vanity) and a great evil. Ecclesiastes 2:21
“Take care to guard against all greed, for life does not consist of possessions.” –Jesus, Luke 12:14–15
You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” –Jesus, Luke 20:20
“It will all crumble if you cling to it”
“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” –Jesus, Luke 20:21
1. See everything through the lens of eternity
If you have been raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. Colossians 3:1–2
2. Act like a steward, not an owner.
The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Psalm 24:1
The Mentality of a Steward
“God with all you’ve given to me, what would you have me do?”
3. Be intentional about generosity
I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving. 2 Corinthians 9:7 MSG
Be generous on every occasion…your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”
2 Corinthians 9:11

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth…Store your treasures in heaven. For wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 NLT
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19
The only thing you take with you into the life to come is what you’ve given away on earth.
